Catherine McMillan

Catherine has always been an artist and a traveller. After Art & Design studies at MacEwan University, her desire for travel and her passion for drawing faces took her wandering around the world as a street artist…from a campground cabin in Tofino to a Niagara Falls street corner, from a Kibbutz in Israel to the Bay of Islands in New Zealand, and from hostels in London and Prague to the Harbour side market in Brisbane, Australia. Catherine’s extensive experience as an international caricature artist taught her to find creative alignment even with a crowd of people watching and eventually led to many exciting illustration projects and opportunities. Some of these include: illustrating the award winning website WildFiles.TV Interactive (winning Gold at the International World Media Festival, Hamburg, Germany), doing illustrations and project management for the CD series Zoology Zone (winning Best Interactive CD, Wildscreen Film Festival, Bristol, UK) and being cast as a courtroom artist in the movie Small Sacrifices with Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O’Neal.

Alongside her illustration work and travels, Catherine studied fine art and painting for years under the mentorship of American painter Eileen Raucher Sutton (whose past students also include Brian Selznick—author and illustrator of The Invention of Hugo Cabret).

Catherine approaches all of her paintings intuitively, beginning with thick textured gesso, followed by layers of fluid acrylic paint and then oil paint, repeatedly applied and wiped off until the right atmosphere is created. Sometimes she starts with a sketch or a clear destination in mind, but often her ideas simply evolve out of the work itself.

“I love to create magical, dreamlike atmospheres in my paintings, like memories of imaginary places that fade in and out of focus. The figures I paint come from those dream worlds and I believe they have their secrets and messages to share with us if we are willing to spend time with them and listen.”

Catherine is the Exhibition Coordinator for VASA (Visual Artist Studio Association of St. Albert) and is an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, a member of VASA St. Albert and of CARFAC Alberta.

Catherine is currently represented by a selection of beautiful galleries and gift shops in Canada and her paintings and drawings can be found in collections throughout Canada, the US, Europe, and Australia.
